Jelmer has a background in industrial design engineering from TU Delft. He developed an interest in 3D graphics somewhere in the 90s, when he found out that the dinosaurs in Jurassic Park were made with 3D software.

He ran his own website agency for 10 years before moving to Norway,  worked with interaction design and digital product development.

With the rise of immersive technologies (augmented reality and virtual reality), he was able to combine his interest for interaction design and 3D graphics. From 2017 onwards, he started learning and exploring the potential of these new technologies.

In 2017 he demoed an AR app of a Tesla Model3, before the car was available, and by doing so pioneered a new car retail experience. The demo was featured on Mashable, Forbes, The Verge, and in Dutch newspaper NRC. Soon after he launched AR Airplanes, a small but fun way to fly RC planes in AR (400.000 downloads) and Just Neon, an app to draw neon tubes in augmented reality.

In 2018 he created Vern for Fremtind in cooperation with Oslo fire department. In context of their own home, Vern helps people to understand what to do in case of fire.

In 2019, Jelmer joined Sopra Steria Norway’s mixed reality department, where he designs and develops projects based around Unity3D and Unreal Engine.

In 2020 he and his colleague Ingri won Microsoft’s accessibility prize during Sopra Steria’s Innovation Awards for illumie, an app to help visually impaired using AR and computer vision technology. illumie continues to receive funding for further development and he is now working with the team on bringing it to the market.
